Frequently Asked Questions

How do I play a tune?
You can play a tune by pressing certain keys on your computer keyboard (the one you type with) or by using your mouse to click the on-screen "kissboard."

The "kissboard" is mapped from MIDDLE C to F as seen above. When you press one of the keys included in the diagram you should be able to hear its corresponding note.

IMPORTANT: If your keyboard doesn't work right away, just click the center of the screen to activate the flash object.

How do I record and playback a tune?
Press the record button (the red one) and wait until it starts blinking. Then play a tune using your computer keyboard or mouse. When you're done, press the stop button (square). To playback what you just recorded, simply press the play button.

How do I save my tune and what is the signature for?
You can save your work by pressing the save button. Then you will be asked to enter the Title, your name, and some remarks, which will be displayed on your song's page. You can also enter an optional signature which acts as a password to verify you as the author of the song when you reply to comments.

How can I access my saved tune?
When you save your tune, you will be redirected back to your recording but this time the title of the tune will be displayed. You can find the sharing URL right below the title. It is also displayed on the comments page.

How do I download the file to my computer?
After you save your tune, you will notice that the save button was replaced by the download file button. Click it to download the .kiss file to your computer.

How do I load or open the .kiss file?
Click the load button. You will be directed to a page where you can select the file you want to load. Click the browse button, select the file, then click OPEN .KISS FILE.

When I load my .kiss file nothing happens.
  • make sure the file wasn't tampered with or modified in any way.
  • make sure you have the latest flash player.
  • try recording and saving a new tune and see if that loads.
  • report the problem or send the file to report@kisstunes.com

Can I play the .kiss file using other players?
No, the .kiss file can only be loaded into our online "kissboard." But we have plans to create a kiss2midi converter.

How can I post a comment on my tune's page?
click add comment located at the opposite end of the title.

Can I play chords or multiple keys at the same time?
Yes you can play up to 4 keys at a time, except for some keys. It varies from one keyboard to another, but there are some keys that you can't press together. This is not a bug, but a limitation of today's QWERTY keyboards.

When I press certain keys together, I don't hear anything.
Again, as I've mentioned above, there are some key pairings that simply won't work. This is a limitation of the hardware and there's nothing we can do about it for now. In our tests we usually encounter this problem when a chord includes the key G (which also plays the note SO/G).

The sound is a bit delayed when I press a key.
This is called latency. Most computer-based recording software has latency or delay. This is usually just a few milliseconds, so if you play it a tune at a slow-enough speed it shouldn't bother you too much. This is sometimes caused by the process of recording itself which might be a little bit heavy for old systems.

The playback is a bit slower than when I recorded it.
Just like when you're playing a flash game online, sometimes you experience some slowing down. That's a memory problem. Don't worry, it doesn't mean that your recording is ruined. Try closing other programs or restarting your browser. On faster systems playback should be normal.

    Is there a recording limit?
You can record up to 2 minutes.

Can I change the instrument sound?
Yes, click on the instrument select button at the lower left corner of the kissboard (the one with an arrow up). For now we only have 2 instruments, but there will be more very very soon!

Can I rename the .kiss file?
Sure you can rename it. But don't change the .kiss extension.

    I have more questions.
